Big news, how I’m horrible at surprises, and creepy baby faces… │Alaska Wedding, Engagement, Portrait, Family, Senior Photographer

I’ve been a little MIA around here lately, and for good reason. I’ve been trying to keep a secret, which I’m totally awful at by the way. Secret Squirrel I am not. I’m the worst at it, especially when it comes to exciting news or surprising someone. Like, for reals. If I buy you a super awesome birthday present, I just want to give it to you RIGHT NOW. Even if your birthday isn’t for another month. So this has been a pretty big deal for me, the whole being patient and waiting thing.

What’s my big surprise you ask?? I’m pregnant!! 🙂 Our due date is December 18th (let’s hope he/she decides to come early and not a week late, I’d rather not be in the hospital on Christmas). Aren’t you proud of me for having the will power to wait?? I won’t lie, it’s been killing me. After the miscarriage in January, we knew we wanted to wait to announce the pregnancy until we knew we were in the clear (otherwise known as out of the first trimester). Last time we waited too, but obviously we never got that far.

Now, don’t get me wrong, our close friends and family have known for awhile because it’s a little hard to hide it from them. The minute we go out to dinner and I’m the only one who doesn’t order an alcoholic beverage, I’m instantly considered a suspect. Even if it’s simply because I don’t feel like drinking. I’m not really a big drinker anyway, but apparently being newly married and not ordering a cocktail raises red flags to all of our other friends our age.

I’m already almost 15 weeks and thank the lord I am because let me tell you, that first trimester is a doozy, it was for me at least. I spent most of weeks 7, 8, and 9 praying to the porcelain gods and feeling like I was on death’s doorstep. I have friends who were sick for 7 months or even one who was sick the ENTIRE 9 months, so I kept crossing my fingers it wouldn’t stick around long. Sure enough, I hit about 10 1/2 weeks and suddenly I felt like a human again. I’m still feeling great for the most part, although I have to really pace myself when it comes to eating, otherwise it suddenly comes right back up. Not fun at all.

We had ultrasounds at 5 and 8 weeks, as the pregnancy progressed, but I have to tell you that the 12 week ultrasound has been my favorite so far.

At 5 weeks, it’s nothing more than a little bubble on the screen. The Dr was really just looking to make sure everything was placed correctly because of my previous miscarriage.

At 8 weeks, it literally looks like a bean, no joke. I kept telling the people I showed, “Look, I’m growing a lima bean inside a kidney bean!”

But at 12 weeks, it actually looks like a real baby!

The whole process was so fun too. The Dr said, “Well it’s sleeping right now, but let’s see if we can wake it up and get it moving.” I was confused and asked, “How do you know it’s sleeping?” and of course she said, “Well it’s not moving.” I felt dumb for even asking, but I had no idea it should be moving, before that ultrasound it was just a little bean. So she started pushing a little harder on my stomach and sure enough, the peanut woke right up, started stretching, moving its arms and legs, and arching it’s back. It was the coolest thing ever! I got all sorts of giddy and wouldn’t stop talking about it after the appointment. At one point, he/she even turned toward us and we could see its face!! It was so cool, but creepy at the same time.

So there you have it, we’re having a baby!!!
